Em busca das nascentes do Sado Multi-cache

(The searching for Sado springs)

Introduction:

P: Esta cache levá-lo-á a percorrer caminhos no Baixo Alentejo em busca das nascentes do Sado. É constituída por duas micro-caches e uma cache final, cheia de "tesouros".

E: This cache will take you to walk by the Lower Alentejo in a searching for Sado springs. It's made of two micro-caches and a final one, full of "treasures".

P:  Esta cache tem um segundo objectivo (apenas para geocachers a viver em Portugal): Promover o aparecimento de mais caches no Baixo Alentejo. Para isso, esta cache tem  lá dentro outras caches prontas a colocar. Não é, contudo, obrigatório.

E: This cache has a second objective (only for geocachers living in Portugal): To promote the appearing of more caches in the Lower Alentejo. So, this cache has inside it other caches ready to be placed. It isn't, however, mandatory. 

The hunt

P: Estacione em N37 39.032 W08 15.997 e dirija-se para as coordenadas publicadas (terá que abrir uma cancela presa com arame mas não é ilegal porque as margens dos rios são propriedade publica e as cancelas estão lá apenas para evitar que o gado, constituído essencialmente por porcos selvagens, se ausente para parte incerta). Nas coordenadas publicadas, procure a primeira micro cache, aprecie (ou arrepie-se com) o local onde o Rio Sado começa, segundo a cartografia oficial. Recolha as coordenadas da 2ª micro cache e siga para lá, passando por  N 37 36.985  W 08 15.747,  onde sugiro que estacione e continue a pé ou de BTT para o 2º ponto, embora possa seguir conduzindo se tiver um carro alto. Na 2ª micro cache, recolha as coordenadas da cache final e observe o local onde terá vivido uma família que se auto sustentava quando havia água e agricultura em Portugal. Está lá tudo; o forno rústico, a casa ainda em bom estado, com a porta aberta, o poço, o curral dos porcos... só faltam a água e as pessoas...  Continue a sua caminhada. O local da cache final, é um monte onde nascem (nasciam) 5 ou 6 ribeiras que afluiam para o Rio Sado, juntamente com outras que vêm da zona daquela serra. A cache está  cerca de 30 metros após o local exacto da nascente (agora seca) de uma delas. 

Aprecie a quietude dos locais visitados, a sua beleza, agora árida e, se tiver vontade, leve uma das micro caches que coloquei na cache principal, para colocar noutro local do Baixo Alentejo, de preferencia no interior. 

A distância total para esta cache é de 8 kms x 2. A parte sugerida para caminhar/BTT é de 2,5 kms x 2 com um a diferença de altitudes de 50 metros ( o mais baixo, 180m e mais alto, 230m). Se fôr um BTTista de "barba rija" e pernas medianamente competentes, até pode fazer tudo de bicla. Não é necessário sair dos trilhos/estradas de terra.

Depois, na zona de Ourique, existe a Barragem Monte da Rocha, em N 37 43.635 W 08 17.260, por onde passa o Rio Sado e onde fiz um pic-nic solitário (bem, com o "Snoopy"). Pode aproveitar para visitar e comer também. Depois,  a oeste deste ponto, até encontra um local para tomar a bica.   

E: Park at N37 39.032 W08 15.997 and go to the published coords. (you'll need to open a fence gate closed with a wire but that's not ilegal because the river's margins are public property and the gates are there solely to hold the cattle, mainly wild pigs). In the cache coordinates, search for the first micro cache and enjoy (or get impressed by) the place where the Sado River begins, accordingly to the official cartography. Get the 2nd micro cache coords. and drive to the place, passing by N 37 36.985  W 08 15.747, where i suggest you park your car, and continue by foot or BTT to the 2nd micro cache. However, you can go by car if you have a tall one. In the 2nd micro, get the final cache coords. and watch the place where a family lived, sustaining himself when there was agriculture and water in Portugal. It's all there; the rustic owen, the house in very good shape, with the door open, the water extraction spot, the pig's place... only water and people are missing... Continue your walk. The final cache's place,  is a hill where 5 or 6 small rivers has its springs and joined together to constitute the Sado River, among with others in the area. The cache is about 30 metres from the exact place where one of these small rivers has (had) its spring.

Enjoy the silence of the visited places, its beauty (now very dry) and if you're in the mood (and live in Portugal) take one of the micro caches from the main one, to place in another spot within Lower Alentejo, preferrably in the interior.

In the Ourique area, there is the Barragem Monte da Rocha dam, at N 37 43.635 W 08 17.260, where the Sado River is present and where  i eated a pic-nic. You can take the chance too.

The total distance for this cache is 8 kms x 2. The suggested walking/BTT course is about 2,5 kms x 2 with an altitude diference of 50 metres (lower, 180m and higher, 230m). No need to leave the trails/unpaved roads.
