This cache is in an ammocan, hidden on the ridge above Black Lake -
near the south end of the Seven Devils.
In his book "Southern Idaho Ghost Towns", author Wayne Sparling
describes Black Lake as "one of Idaho's most beautiful lakes
accessible by road." I have to agree with him. I don't know if it's
true, but I have also been told that it's Idaho's most *remote*
lake that you can drive to as well.
Black Lake is a good two-hour drive from Council. A high-clearance
vehicle is reccommended, and 4WD would be even better. The road in
usually opens around the 4th of July and stays open 'till the snow
flies. This is a great place to camp, but bring your tent. Trailers
and campers are not reccommended (I sure wouldn't try it!). The
lake is full of brook trout, and there is even better fishing
(rainbow trout) within hiking distance. There are 4 developed
campsites at the lake, and some undeveloped - and one outhouse. One
of my favorite places to camp, Black Lake is truly a gem of Idaho -
and the scenery on the way in is unbeatable.
Around 100 years ago, there was a mine operation high above the
southwest side of the lake. Black Lake town was below, on the
northeast side. Ore was moved from the mineshaft down to the mill
by a tram that crossed high above the lake. The structures are
almost all completely destroyed now, but there are a few
identifiable remnants to be seen if you hike around near the
lake.
The cache is hidden a short hike & moderate rock-scramble from
the lake. We hiked in from the town site. Cords for the beginning
of our hike were: N45°11.447', W116°32.219'.
