Geocache Description:

Nightingale Wood - a little-known place near Swindon.

Just east of Swindon is Nightingale Wood, a new woodland created by Forest Enterprises. It has many varieties of trees and over 3500 metres of surfaced paths that remain dry underfoot in bad weather. It's a great place for a good walk. Kids and dogs will love it.

There are two ways to reach Nightingale Wood. The large official carpark (N 51 35.577 W 001.42.198) is reached by driving down the lane that is directly opposite the Nightingale Hotel in the village of South Marston. However, be warned that in wet weather the carpark can become quite muddy (although the woodland paths will be perfectly fine). The cache is less than half a mile away.

However, if you have children you may well like to combine the cache hunt with a visit to Roves Farm, in which case you could use their free carpark. You reach this by driving down the lane that goes southwards in the village of Sevenhampton. At Roves Farm there are lots of animals and other attractions, including the world’s largest living willow maize. You can find out more on their website www.rovesfarm.co.uk. It is usually open daily during the summer until September from 10 to 5.30 daily.

At the southern end of their car park, is a path at N 51 35.754 W 001.41.822. It goes westwards directly into Nightingale Wood. It is only a fairly short walk from here to the cache.

Whichever place you choose to park, it is well worth while exploring the woodland after finding the cache by following the path that goes all around the edge.

The cache is in a small snap-lid plastic box inside a green plastic wrap (which please use afterwards). There are several small swap items inside.

SPECIAL NOTE: It was reported 15 May 2015 that the logbook was soaked. As the owner is unable to get to the site at the moment it will be very helpful if a kind geocacher on their next visit can put a dry replacement logbook in the box. - and also make a note of that in their report. Many thanks. UPDATE: On 14th July Teds Team have very kindly placed a fresh log book in the cache to celebrate the cache's 10th Birthday !!! Didn't realise it had been there for 10 years, but Teds Team are right. Many thanks Teds Team !.

P.S. The owner of this cache is getting on in years and is unfortunately unable to maintain the cache these days. It will therefore be much appreciated if future finders of this cache could provide a new log book if the original is wet or missing - also dry out the box is is is damp inside. Very many thanks. Bonaccord.

(Please note also that In Feb 2011 it was reported that TBs expected to be found have gone missing).
