A small cache near to a spectacular granite viaduct in the northern extremities of the well-known Lydford Gorge. !O???
Lydford Gorge is the deepest Gorge in the whole of the south west, and is surrounded by ancient woodland. Formed by the fast flowing river Lyd, the gorge is home to the 90ft White Lady Waterfall and the eerie Devil’s Cauldron. However, to appreciate these geological features, you should enter the gorge via the National Trust centre further down stream - £4.50 adults, £2.20 children (geocaching’s free!).
The massive granite viaduct was of the former Exeter to Plymouth railway line and was opened in 1874 to form an extension to the LSWR (London and South Western Railway) which had reached Exeter in 1860. The line was downgraded and fell into disuse in the 1960’s following a transfer of all of the lines west of Exeter to the Western Region of British Rail.
To reach the cache, there is room for a few cars at N50°38.730 W004°06.181. You will then have to follow the southerly public footpath until you reach the viaduct. Once you are underneath, how the fun begins. Please be extremely careful as there are some VERY steep drops and it can be slippery when wet. The difficulty rating is quite high as the GPS reception can be poor near to the cache.
