Geocache Description:

This is an underwater cache located within snorkel depth on the reef at Isles de la Petite Terre

This cache is dedicated to the memory of a true sailor and outdoorsman: my life-long friend and stalwart sailing companion, Donald L. Miller, whose ashes we scattered here to an audience of curious reef fish some ten long years ago when he passed beyond this world at the ripe old age of 40. Donnie would have approved of this spot "on the lonely cays away down south where the gulls call to the wind's song and the long-backed breakers croon" -- (Frank A. Wightman, Wylo Sails Again). The name "Water Brothers" is from the poem I wrote in Donald's honor, a copy of which you will find in the cache. Please leave it there.

The idea behind this cache is for it to serve as a place to exchange beautiful seashells and other non-corrosive items of beauty. Bear in mind that this is a protected marine santuary. You may not take anything from it, dead or alive, to put in the cache or otherwise. Observing these rules will keep this a place of pristine beauty, teeming with a wide and healthy variety of sea life.

The cache itself is a rectangular glass storage jar with no metal parts and nothing metal within it, covered with sand and seashells to partially disguise it. Unless you leave gold, please keep it that way. Any travel bugs should be double bagged in freezer weight plastic, with all the air sucked out to avoid oxidation of the aluminum tags. Don't leave anything that will lighten the cache, which is designed to sit firmly on the bottom. The diver's notepad for logging your cache will not hold many entries, but then again I don't expect many finds at this site. Nonetheless, please be especially diligent in recording your finds online as well as in the limited log space at this cache.

This should be an easy find for any experienced snorkeler. The 1.5 terrain rating merely reflects the fact that it's underwater. Be aware that there generally is a current here, setting from east to west, and it can be fairly strong depending on wind and tide conditions. The 1.5 difficulty rating merely reflects the fact that you have to get here by boat. Commercial snorkel and beach trips come here every day from St. Francois on Guadeloupe, and possibly from Pointe au Pitre. The white sand beaches and totally pristine island make this a fine place to beachcomb and spend the day hunting seashells and observing Antillean iguanas.

If you come on your own boat, read the Leeward Islands Cruising guide on the tricky approach to Isles de la Petite Terre first, and come on something that draws no more than six feet of water. The passage from Guadeloupe should be regarded as an open ocean passage. Don't attempt it in anything you would not put out to sea in.

Small note on cache maintenance: 1) this is not a "vacation" cache -- I come here 3-4 times a year on charters, enough to maintain the cache, if needed, but it is designed not to need much maintenance. 2) On June 1, 2005, I obtained advance, express permission from the on-duty park ranger to place this cache. He inspected the container and read the standard cache instructions (printed on waterproof paper in French and English and also laminated for further protection), smiled and said "c'est tres bien!".
