This is an easy cache that will take you for a short walk along a rough track at the south end of the Port Hills - here you'll get some great views on both sides of Gebbies Pass - ocean in both directions. The shortest track into the cache starts at a small carpark under the big rock outcrop at S 43 40.257 E 172 37.532 Or if you want to do a 45 minute loop walk, park at the higher carpark at S 43 39.979 E 172 37.473 and walk down the road to the start of the track. When you have found the cache, continue for five minutes along the track to a junction, turn right at the white pipe marker and follow the track up to the ridge and back to the upper carpark.
At the cache site, I had some difficulty with coordinates due to the proximity of towering rock walls - no doubt you will too!! But intelligent geocachers will soon pick out the cache location, right beside the track.
These tracks are not well used or well marked, but are obvious to follow - now that I've done a little track maintenance just for you. The terrain is rougher than many Port Hills tracks, and impossible for MTB. At times the track has a steep drop-off to the road below, so take care of your footing. It would be rather a challenge at night. As you pass through some small patches of bush watch your head on overhanging branches, and once out of the bush mind the overhanging rocks.
