Well liked by locals and tourists, Princes Street Gardens at the
foot of Edinburgh Castle forms a green oasis in the centre of town.
The area was originally part of the castle defensive moat (called
Nor' Loch), but when it turned in to a health hazard with people
dumping their rubbish and other waste in it, the loch was drained
in the 1750s to create the public gardens. In 1816 an Act of
Parliament protected the site from commercial development and this
is the reason we can still enjoy an unobstructed view to the castle
from Princes Street.
But as interesting the history of the place is, this geocache is
concerned with the artwork that can be found in the gardens today;
more specifically the sculptures. To find the geocache you need to
find the following 6 sculptures first and take the second
word from the base of each statue (If there is more than one
inscription, use the main one at the front). You can utilise the
space below the picture to write the word down.

Once you have found them all, you can sit down on one of the
many benches here and convert the letters into numbers using the
following grid:
|
a = 8 |
b = 9 |
c = 0 |
d = 2 |
|
e = 4 |
f = 2 |
g = 7 |
h = 2 |
i = 6 |
j = 0 |
k = 0 |
l = 1 |
m = 6 |
n = 4 |
o = 5 |
p = 9 |
q = 4 |
r = 1 |
s = 5 |
t = 8 |
u = 1 |
v = 3 |
|
w = 9 |
x = 3 |
y = 7 |
z = 3 |
|
You will need to match up the numbers for the clues below. For
example, if the word from the third sculpture was "geocache", and
the clue is "first letter, sculpture 3", then look up "g" and the
value is 7.
A = first letter, sculpture 2 = _ |
E = first letter, sculpture 1 = _ |
B = first letter, sculpture 6 = _ |
F = second letter, sculpture 4 = _ |
C = sixth letter, sculpture 5 = _ |
G = third letter, sculpture 1 = _ |
D = fifth letter, sculpture 3 = _ |
H = seventh letter, sculpture 2 = _ |
