Trilliums and Mayapples - Allegany County Cache #13 –Centerville, NY
One of “The caches of Allegany County” Series, located in the township of Centerville, NY. The goal of this series is to place a cache in every township in Allegany County.
The Swift Hill Forest area is dotted with sweeping upland pastures and cut through with small creeks and hardwood forest stands. Nearly one-quarter of Centerville is State Forest and the Finger Lakes Trail section of the North Country Trail clips the northwestern edge of the township. The hunt for this cache starts at a parking area.
You will climb up hill gradually, ascending about 130 ft in .44 miles, mostly on Jeep trails.
First follow the well-packed Jeep road straight ahead of you from the parking area, then at a snowmobile route junction, you will follow a “path rarely taken”. When you get to this spot (you'll see a "Fillmore" sign), look to your left about between the straight ahead and the left hand turn of the snowmobile path, and you will see a slightly overgrown path. Follow this and with the coords to help, you will be led onto more faint paths yet to an area of springtime Mayapples and Trillium. Tread lightly as you make your final approach. There are common violets and sweet white violets growing here as well.
