Geocache Description:

Welcome to the Newtown Battlefield Reservation State Park and Sullivan’s Monument. This is the site of General Sullivan’s Revolutionary War victory over British forces and 1000 Iroquois Indian Confederation warriors who sided with the British in August 1779.

A stone monument was dedicated at the top of the hill in August 1879, the centennial of the Battle of Newtown. It was replaced with a granite monument in 1912.

**This beautiful 330-acre park is open from mid May through mid October from 10:00 am until sunset. (The gates close at sunset). It offers camping, hiking, picnicking, scenic overlooks, ball fields, playgrounds, pavilions and horseshoe pits.**
There are overlooks and interpretive displays where you can learn the history of the Revolutionary War in the Chemung River Valley. Also during your visit you may see white-tailed deer, turkey, grouse, rabbits, squirrels, and on a rare occasion, a bear or mountain lion.

Don’t park and walk during off-season. It’s a long walk and not maintained during the winter. The park is scheduled to close for the season on Sunday 10/21. There is a yearly re-enactment of the Battle of Newtown in August. There is usually a Fall Foliage festival sometime in October. There is an entrance fee per car if you visit on the weekends or holidays (In past years, and when we originally placed the cache here, there was no charge - Sorry.

Here are a couple of ways to get to the park entrance.
Take Rt 17/I 86 to Exit 58 (Lowman). If you were heading East to get to this exit, take a left at the top of the ramp toward Lowman. If coming heading West to get to this exit, take a right at the top of the exit toward Lowman. At the T-intersection, turn left. Proceed along the new access road, up the base of the hill where it joins with Oneida Rd. Turn right into the park entrance. Look for signs.
You can also take the Elmira exit 56. You will need to get onto Jerusalem Hill Rd and go up the hill, not into the city of Elmira then Oneida Rd will be the first right.

This cache is a large gray ammo container and it has a Patriotic/Revolutionary War theme. Items that have to do with battlefields such as soldiers, Indians, horses, or anything red, white, or blue would be great. Enjoy!
