Esta cache foi plantada num dia de chuva e neblinas, num vale da Serra de Arga, uma das mais bem preservadas do Alto Minho. Aqui começa o maciço montanhoso que, terminando nos Pirinéus, rasga o norte da Península Ibérica. Já por cá andaram Romanos e Visigodos, que foram deixando segredos e lendas, nos tempos em que a serra se chamava Monte Medúlio. Foi aqui que os beneditinos fundaram o Mosteiro Máximo, lá pelo século VII, que albergou inúmeros peregrinos a caminho de Santiago de Compostela. E é precisamente nas imediações desse pequeno mosteiro de pedra, hoje chamado de S. João d’Arga, que repousa a cache, entre musgos e húmus.
Venham sem pressas, procurando no mapa a povoação de Arga de S. João. Um acesso possível é a partir de Caminha, pela N301 em direcção à Serra de Arga. Passados 3.5 km, virem à direita para a EM526 e, 4.5 km depois, à esquerda para a EM552. Depois de Arga de São João prestem atenção, de forma a não passar a pequena placa que, na borda da estrada, indica o mosteiro.
Desçam de carro até junto do mosteiro. Depois, a pé, contornem o edifício, como manda a tradição, e contemplem as encostas rochosas que cercam o vale. Ouçam o correr da água lá em baixo, no ribeiro de S. João. Imaginem-se monges beneditinos, num tempo em que não havia qualquer estrada e lobos e salteadores vagueavam pela a serra.
Quando vierem, certifiquem-se de que não é 28 ou 29 de Agosto. É que é nestas datas que se realiza a Romaria de S. João d'Arga, que atrai gentes de todo o Norte de Portugal e da Galiza. A festa é rija e prolonga-se pela noite fora. Abunda o hidromel, uma potente mescla de aguardente e mel. Não será provavelmente a melhor altura para andar de GPS na mão a vasculhar por entre pedras e arbustos…
"A Romaria de S. João d'Arga é um retrato que espelha o modo de sentir, de ser e de estar das nossas gentes. Noite fora, manhã dentro, o arraial acaba com o lavar da cara às primeiras luzes do dia 29, no ribeiro próximo que ali corre. (...) E uma das muitas lendas que a serra guarda era de as raparigas casadoiras atirarem uma pedra ao penedo casamenteiro e daí a tradição do S. João casamenteiro, também, merecer a seguinte quadra: Ó meu Senhor S. João / Casai-me que bem podeis / Já tenho teias de aranha / Naquilo que bem sabeis."
E agora sim, podem sacar do GPS e iniciar a busca. Boa sorte! Depois de encontrada a cache, recomendamos um passeio tranquilo (a pé ou de carro) pelos outros “tesouros” escondidos que esta magnífica serra oculta.

This cache was planted on a rainy and misty day, in a valley of Serra de Arga, one of the better preserved mountains in the Alto Minho region. This is the beginning of the mountainous system that cuts through the Northern Iberian Peninsula all the way to the Pyrenees. The Romans and the Visigoths have already been here, leaving secrets and legends, in a time when the mountain was called Monte Medúlio. It was here that the Benedictine monks established the Maximum Monastery, around the 7th century, which hosted many pilgrims in the way to Santiago de Compostela. And it is precisely in the surroundings of this small stone monastery that the cache is resting, among moss and humus.
You should come with no hurries, searching in the map for the small village named Arga de S. João. One possible way is from Caminha, taking N301 in direction of Serra de Arga. After 3.5 km, turn right onto EM526 and, 4.5 km later, left onto EM552. After passing Arga de S. João pay attention, so as not to miss the sign that, in the border of the road, indicates the monastery.
Descend to the monastery by car. Afterwards, on foot, walk around it, as the tradition dictates, and contemplate the rocky slopes that surround the valley. Listen to the water, down in the S. João creek. Imagine yourselves as Benedictine monks, in a time when there wasn’t any road and wolves and robbers roamed the mountain.
When you come, make sure it’s not the 28 or 29 of August, since these are the dates of the traditional pilgrimage of S. João d'Arga, which attracts people from all Northern Portugal and Galicia.
And now you may finally take out your GPS and start the search. Good luck! After finding the cache, we recommend a relaxing tour (on foot or by car) to the other hidden “treasures” that this magnificent mountain holds.
