Geocache Description:

This cache is placed on one of the peaks of “The Lady’s Slipper” mountain just west of Port Elizabeth, and can be seen when travelling on the N2.

It is quite a journey to the cache, and could take a whole morning, depending on whether you have a gate pass or whether you will have to walk the +/- 2km up the mountain like we did. It is a strenuous walk, that will see you gain 240m in altitude (that is 1m up for every 10m forward), before you find the cache. Do not despair though – if I could push 8 month old Cara to the top in her pushcart, then anybody should be able to complete the walk - and the views will make up for it.

The road up the mountain is a Telkom service road that is tarred all the way, but you will have to travel on a gravel road before you get to it. Vehicle access, on the tarred road, is restricted by a gate near the start and I suggest you park on the shoulder of the road at S33° 52.222 E25° 15.448.

The views from the top will make the hard slog up the mountain worthwhile. You will be able to see Port Elizabeth, Uitenhage and Jeffreys Bay from the top, with the Cockscomb Mountain also of in the distance. The walk down is a breeze.

Please note that this is a nature reserve, so stick to the road and when leaving the road close to the cache, be very careful not to damage local fauna and flora.

The cache (a 2l ice cream container) is hidden under a rock with an overhang and obscured from view on the sides with smaller stones.

(The rating may be generous, but was arrived at through the on-line form provided.)
