Geocache Description:

Punakaiki's "Pancake Rocks" are a unique geological feature formed of layers of limestone and mudstone.

The rocks were originally formed by minute sea creatures, which died and settled on the sea floor over 100 million years ago. "After being buried and compacted, grains of shells and skeleton were put under such immense pressure that they passed into solution. For reasons still unclear, some minerals merged to form layers of mudstone between layers of limestone. The forces of sea and weather during the past 100 million years have eroded the mudstone more than the limestone, enhancing the "pancake" effect." To log this cache, you must provide email the following information to the cache owner. 1. What is the name of the process that created the pancake rocks (described above) (a word from one of the info signs, starts with "S" ends with "G" and it IS NOT "sculpting"). If you don't know what it is then don't log the cache. 2. Are you able to identify any other locations where this process has occurred? (either from personal experience of by doing an internet search using the name of the process). Please include the name of the location and approximate co-ords in your email to the cache owner. 3. Approximately how thick are each of the the pancake layers? (either estimate or measure this).
