Geocache Description:

At the Monterey/Grand Avenue intersection go south through the intersection and up over the little driveway/road between the Monday Club and the restaurant. You will see the trail ahead of you. FYI - it's "in" the bridge.

This cache introduces the seeker to two charming assets of the City. Namely the Monday Club and the creek that at this juncture is not often seen by many other than the locals. Right where Grand Avenue intersects Monterey Street, there is a charming, unobstrusive building nestled back under a set of large trees.

This beautiful historic building was designed by none other than the Hearst Castle architect, Julia Morgan, and was constructed in 1934. In 1928, Grace Barneberg, President of the newly formed Monday Club, enlisted Julia Morgan to design it. Grace's husband, John W. Barneberg, was the 1912 California Delegate to Democratic National Convention which was held in Baltimore, Maryland. So I guess Grace had some clout and rubbed elbows with the right people. The Monday Club is a non-profit civic organization with a long history of community service which including funding a lighted entrance to the city in 1926, scanning for enemy planes during WWII, and landscaping San Luis Obispo's first park, Mitchell Park in 1928.
