Geocache Description:

On a hillside near the sandy seep along the Mt Elden trail system.

Cache is a camoflaged altoids tin to replace ammo can stolen recently. The Sandy seep area is where the Radio Fire started in early Summer of 1976-the fire burned the entire side of the moutain from this area to the summit ridge. Parts of Flagstaff were evacuated. The area is starting to recover now and is an interesting hike. A poet named Harrision Conrad lived here in the early 1900's, no trace of his home is left. Elden Pueblo, a ruin maintained by the Forest service is located along highway 89 about 0.5 miles south of the Sandy seep trailhead, Some other ruins which are small outliers of elden pueblo are located on top of some of the hills near sandy seep. If you see any potsherds or other artifacts in the area, look but do not disturb. It is illegal to remove these items. The Geology of the area is also interesting-Mt. Elden is a volcanic lava dome, but the hills and area leading toward the top of the moutain on this side is sedimentary rock that has been tilted and uplifted by the lava dome. several of the layers of the Grand Canyon can be observed here tilted on their side. The hills which the sandy seep trail winds around are Kaibab limestone, the top layer of the Grand Canyon, the sandy area where the seep is are formed by sandstone and you can see hills leading up toward the top of the mountain that are red sandstone. There is a Map at the trailhead showing the trail system. The trail also passes through an area which burned in 1996, so you can see several stages of fire recovery. Initial contents were; geocaching letter, several small trade items and a pencil and several sheets of log paper. If log is getting full, let me know and I will bring more sheets out.
