Geocache Description:

Cache is about 40 metres off the path along one of the trails in the Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve

Klipriviersberg was declared as one of Johannesburg's natural heritage sites in 1984 and one of only three iron age sites in the Guateng area. The area was inhabited by BaTsawana between 1400 and 1650.

Their relative peacefull existance came to an end in the early 1800's when migrations of people from the mighty Zulu kingdoms dispered these pastoral communities.

A reconstructed Batsawana dwelling is in the reserve.

The reserve also contains remains of early white farming. In 1850 Sarel Johannes Marais laid out the farm Rietvlei on the south side of the Klipriviersberg hills. The remains of the Marais homestead is still in the reserve.

The reserve also has animals such as Wildebeast and Blesbuck, however these are not always seen.

The cache is hidden amongst a few rocks approximately 40 metres off the path. There are no actual hiking markers, however there are good paths in the reserve.

Entrance is from the Klipriviers Recreation Centre. Please visit the pub to have the gate opened and to register your name in the book. Entry fee for the hike is R 7.50 per person.

Outside of normal "pub hours" (10:00 to 17:00), please call Dave on (011) 943-2670 to have the gate opened for you.

Parking is at: S 26 D 18.390 - E 28 D 00.668
