Cava de Viriato / Viriato's Wall
PT: Junto ao largo da Feira de S. Mateus, fica esta pérola da arqueologia viseense. São escassas as informações relativas às suas origens, mas permitem concluir que se tratou de um acampamento militar construído pelos Romanos aquando da sua presença na Península. A tese clássica liga a construção da Cava ao tempo e responsabilidade de Décimo Júnio Bruto (137-136 A.C.). É um espaço de planta octogonal, rodeado por muros e por um fosso de protecção. A partir do séc. XVI, foi indevidamente associada ao grande guerreiro lusitano Viriato, passando a ter o seu nome, reforçado neste século pela colocação de um monumento em sua honra. Viriato foi um grande herói, que conseguiu unir vários dos povos que habitavam a península, liderando uma resistência que se opôs ao domínio romano, durante cerca de 8 anos mas a Cava é de facto uma construção romana.
EN: Next to the plaza of St. Mathew Fair (Feira de S. Mateus), we can find this pearl of viseense archaeology. The informations regarding its origins are scarce, but they allow to conclude that it was a military encampment built by the Romans upon their presence in the Peninsula. The classic thesis binds the construction of the “Digging” (wall describes it better) to the time and responsibility of Décimo Júnio Bruto (137-136 B.C.). It's a space of octogonal plant, encircled by walls and an protection ditch. From the XVI century and on, it was improperly associated with the great lusitan warrior Viriato starting to have its name. This mistake was strengthened in this century with the presence of a monument in Viriato's honor. Viriato was a great hero, who was able to join several of the peoples who inhabited the peninsula, leading a resistance that opposed to the Roman domain for 8 years, but the Digging is ,without doubt, a Roman construction.
