In the 1960's and 1970's Göteborg was one of
the leading shipbuilding sites in the world but today there are
only memories left. In the mid 1970's about 15000 people were
employed in the shipping industry. Counting all kinds of suppliers
up to 200 000 people was depending on the shipping industry,
including my late fathers company! The last ship that was built
left the Arendal shipyard 1988. It was the
icebreaker Oden. I was actually working on the last ship
equipped at the Eriksberg Shipyard (in the summer of 1981), even
after the shipyard was officially closed. There are some more
shipyards to be found, but the four giving the names to the caches
are the most important ones.
Enjoy the caches in the hot parts of Göteborg
there is a lot of action on the old shipyards sites. In the more
central ones there are mainly residential buildings, and at Arendal
there are industrial areas.
More information about the shipyards can be found

Arendal 1963 - 1989
Founded in 1963 Arendal was the most modern
shipyard in the world. One product delivered from Arendal was the
floating dock that was exposed to the world when the Russian atomic
submarine Kursk was salvaged after its tragic accident. I actually
remember when the dock was towed from Göteborg, as I watched it
from my parental home.
The cache is placed in a small recreation area
close to what used to be the leisure facility for the employees.
Today it is a modern conference centre. You can actually walk on a
path almost to it.
