Geocache Description:

Short easy walk to the Bowder Stone on good paths - short scramble to the cache.

IF THERE ARE BROKEN BOTTLES ETC WHERE YOU ARE LOOKING YOU ARE IN THE WRONG PLACE.

SPOILER PHOTO IS TAKEN FROM THE FOOT OF THE STEPS TO THE BOWDER STONE TOWARDS THE CACHE SITE.

A walk of 600 yards from the National Trust car park (with disabled parking at road level) on the Keswick to Borrowdale road (free parking for two cars off the road 200 yards away on the Keswick side). The walk takes you past a working quarry and abseiling face with grand views of High Spy and Maiden's Moor.

The stone is one of Lakeland's most famous features, a 2000 ton stone, some 30 feet high (a ladder allows you to climb to the top) fifty feet across and ninety feet in circumference, perhaps the largest fragment of rock in the world. It rests in a state of delicate balance and yet it is possible to shake hands under the stone at one point. It did not topple down from the mountain side as many visitors assume, for it is not a local rock. It was most likely carried here from Scotland by the glaciers of the Ice Age. It possibly gets its name from Balder, son of the Norse God Odin, but there are no legends attached to this boulder.
