For my birthday I got "The Illustrated At the Fireside, True
South African Stories. by Roger Webster" from a good
friend.
I got this extract relating to Botshabelo that I want to
share.
"At a place called Botshabelo, 'The Place of Refuge', a band of
Pedi Christian converts, under the leadership of Reverend Alexander
Merensky, had built a mision station. By late 1870, Botshabelo
boasted 1600 inhabitants, a mill, a store, a wagon-building shop
and the largest school in the Transvaal at the time. At the heart
of the settlement was the church - built by the converts from
stone, brick and thatch.
Today, a number of these structures still stand - the church, the
mission and Fort Merensky."
The cache is a plastic 2L and is located within easy walking
distance from the car-park. It is hidden under a big rock, with all
exposed openings covered with smaller rocks, so when you replace
the cache, please do the same. You can use your car to drive to
within a few meters of the cache, but I would not encourage this,
as ground-clearance might be a problem. So park you car, haul out
the picnic basket and relax. Four hiking trails are available but
are rather strenuous, the longest being 12km. Enjoy!
PLEASE
BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR SNAKES AND NASTIES BEFORE REMOVING
ROCKS.
