Dutchman's Rock has been called one of the "hidden treasures" of
Marin. It commands views of the Alpine and Bon Tempe watersheds, on
to Mt. Diablo in the east. The hike to it is not very long, but it
climbs about 450 feet above the trailhead, with some steep areas
along the way.
To reach the cache, take the Lily Gulch trail at mile maker 5.88
along the Bolinas-Fairfax road (around 37° 57.368N, 122° 38.245W).
The trail starts up the left side of the ravine, but follows the
far right ravine. You will come to a spur trail that heads right,
which will take you up the backside of Dutchman's Rock. Make sure
you stay on the trails, bushwhacking your way to the cache is not
advised.
The cache is an ammo container, hidden a few steps from the main
trail. You may have to look carefully for it, but please make sure
you leave it as it was hidden so that it is not visible from the
trail.
Many hikers continue from the Rock to Carson Falls, where you
can find another cache. You can also hike to Reposo Treasure Hunt
or the Pipeline caches from here -- or simply stop in order to
enjoy the Mystery of the Dutchman.
