Geocache Description:

The second in the Bute Archaeology Geocache series, we go To The Lighthouse, and a hidden port.

Rubha’n Eun Lighthouse

You would hardly believe it, but Glencallum Bay was a hive of activity. Today, all that remains immediately visible are the Rubha’n Eun beacon, and set back from the bay, the ruins of an inn, complete with walled garden (This is the archaeology bit at N55 43.910 W5 00.659).

Herdsmen would bring their livestock down the drove road, and load them on to boats that took them to Largs. Tugs would sit in the bay waiting on becalmed clippers, and race to be first to throw a line and earn the towing dues to take the clipper up the Clyde to dock.

The cache is hidden in the lamp just off the West Island Way. Park at N55 44.824 W5 00.948, and pick up the path heading south. The path can be treacherous when wet, (I routinely use two walking poles on this stretch -it beats falling!)

You will see the lighthouse when you pass the point at N55 43.984 W5 00.286 and although your route will seem straightforward, you must trust your GPSr

The cache is small, and great care must be taken when you open the pane of glass to access the cache contents. Similarly, please ensure the bolt on the pane is properly secured before you leave.
