E:

Built on the hill of Santo Amaro, it contributed to the city growth, at its south side. Its construction was ordered by Gualdim Pais (Grand Master of the Templar Order) and it suffered many Moors and later on Castillians attacks, fact responsible for its successive recovering works.

Gualdim Pais, Hand Master of the Templars Order was responsible for the construction of the Castle of Pombal, in 1161. Altogether with the military headquarters of Montemor, Soure, Redinha, Penela, Germanelo and Miranda do Corvo, it formed the defensive barrier of Coimbra against the Moorish attacks.

The city grew on the south side, where today we find the main road and the ruins of the old churches of Santa Maria do Castelo and S. Pedro, at present a cemetery.

But the Moors did not gave up conquering the Portuguese territory and therefore, the Castle of Pombal was attacked several times, being partially destroyed. Standing at the Santo Amaro hill, the Monument was also attacked and sacked by the Castillians, that stopped there before going to the Batlle of Aljubarrota where hey were defeated.

After remaining abandoned for a few years, the castle was rebuilt by order of D. Manuel, that ordered the Old Tower to be reconstructed. About 50 years later, the Mayor Pedro de Sousa Ribeiro, also ordered the Church of Santa Maria do Castelo to be built.

On the seventeenth century the Castelo Melhor Count’s decided to inhabit this space, and made the necessary adaptations, recovering the architectonic manueline elements.

Kings D. Sancho I and D. Dinis also contributed to the embellishment of this monument, while transforming it into residence and palace.

Like all other castles this one would also be affected by the French Invasions, suffering several damages. Years later this monument was rebuilt and nowadays it is one of the best restored Portuguese castles. There we can see the collection of capitals and Gothic mansonries from the Church of Santa Maria do Castelo, located near the Palace.

P:
