Eric was half-running down the damp city street. While glancing
once more at his watch he shifted his guitar bag to the other
shoulder. He had to get to the club by six o’ clock to warm up and
be ready for his first big gig with his band. The distant crunch of
a heavily distorted guitar echoed up the street from the club. Only
a block more to go, Eric could pick up a few of the notes and
recognized the band Trash was playing. Trash was the creation of
one of the local bullies and was known for its strong death-metal
sound and angry lyrics. Although Eric disliked the rather obnoxious
music, the group managed to have a strong following of people who
were enthralled by the band. This made Eric even more nervous about
his upcoming gig as this was the big Battle of the Bands event
where his band was competing with Trash.
The street started glowing in reflected light as Eric neared the
neon sign of the Rock Junction club. Eric turned into the club’s
side alleyway to enter through the back door when he found himself
standing before the silhouette of a tall and mysterious looking
man. “Somebody’s in a hurry.", the man spoke. “Yeah, I got the gig
after these guys.”, Eric nodded towards the sound coming from the
back entrance. The tall man spoke up, “So you’re in the Battle of
the Bands tonight, eh? Well, I’m wishing you the best ‘cause these
guys don’t know how to rock.” The man took another step forward to
reveal his face in the glow of the neon. His straight, black hair
traveled down to a sharp jaw. Deep set eyes stared over a large,
craggy nose. The man brushed aside some hair to flash his
ring-covered fingers, “Rock n’ roll, my son, goes back to the
blues. Its not about anger and malice but love and a passionate
feeling that makes you want to move. Do you know your rock ‘n roll
son?”. “You mean like some of the greatest bands of all time and
their history?”, Eric asked. “Yup. ‘Cause once you do, and you
learn from them, you’ll be able to play your heart out and win over
this audience.”
A skinny man wearing a scarf yelled from further down the alley,
“You coming Joe? We gotta get back to the tour bus.” Joe slapped
Eric’s hand as he turned to leave, “Keep it real man.”.
Keeping Joe’s words in his mind, Eric got on stage that night
and played with a passion he hadn’t known he possessed. The
audience moved to the music as if they were a fluid medium
responding to every little nuance of Eric’s guitar. When the votes
were tallied, Eric’s band left Trash in their rightful place – just
another garage band of confused teenagers.
Eric wanted those who knew real rock to have a place to meet and
exchange trinkets of rock ‘n roll. But to keep the location secret,
he had a quiz for those interested to complete. Simply place the
parenthesized numbers next to the correct answers in the
coordinates below corresponding to each question.
