Jaakko Ilkan patsas/The Statue of Jaakko Ilkka Traditional Geocache

A peasant rebellion, the so-called Cudgel War, was fought in the area of Finland in 1596 - 1597.
The war started in Southern Ostrobothnia when peasants decided to give up paying taxes to nobility for upkeeping an army. The peasants took up arms to defend their decision. As they had no firearms they armed themselves with bows, spears and cudgels. So, the Cudgel War between the peasants and the soldiers commanded by the nobility started. The purpose of the rebellion was to defend their independence and to take back the property that had been illegally taken from them by the nobility. The whole Cudgel War ended up in complete defeat for the peasants, but before that it enlarged also to other parts of Finland (Central and Northern Ostrobothnia, Häme and Savo).
Jaakko Ilkka was from Ilmajoki and he was the most famous warlord in the Gudgel War.

When Finland became an independent country the people of the Civil Guard started to plan setting up memorials for the Cudgel War. The project started in 1920 and in 1924 there was an inaugural ceremony for the Statue of Jaakko Ilkka in Ilmajoki.

The Statue of Ilkka is founded in the place, where - according to tradition - Jaakko Ilkka and five of his companions were brutally executed.
The statue is created by artist, architect Matti Visanti, who also sculptured the Memorial of the Cudgel Men.

Nuijasodaksi kutsuttu sota käytiin suomessa 1596 - 1597.
Tuolloin päättivät Etelä-Pohjanmaan suomenkielisten pitäjäin talopojat lopettaa linnaleirin maksamisen sotaväelle ja puolustaa päätöstään asein. Tästä ratkaisusta sai alkunsa nuijasodan nimellä tunnettu talonpoikaiskapina aateliston komentamaa sotaväkeä -aatelisia ja talonpoikaisia ratsumiehiä- vastaan. Kapinan tarkoituksena oli itsenäisyyden puolustaminen ja siinä vaiheessa erityisesti aateliston ja ratsutilallisten linnaleirin avulla keräämän omaisuuden hankkiminen takaisin. Kapina kukistettiin verisesti, mutta ennen sitä se ehti laajentua yleiseksi kansannousuksi Pohjanmaalla, Hämeessä ja Savossa.
Ilmajoelta kotoisin oleva Jaakko Ilkka oli Nuijasodan kuuluisin johtaja.

Itsenäisyyden alkuvuosina suojeluskuntalaiset alkoivat suunnitella nuijasodan muistomerkkien pystyttämistä. 1920 hanke pantiin vireille ja 1924 vietettiin Ilmajoella Ilkan patsaan vihkiäisjuhlaa, josta muodostui todellinen kansanjuhla.

Jaakko Ilkan patsas on pystytetty paikkaa, jossa perimätiedon mukaan Jaakko Ilkka ja viisi hänen kumppaniaan häpeällisesti hirtettiin.

Ilkan patsaan on suunnitellut ja toteuttanut arkkitehti Matti Visanti, joka on myös veistänyt Nuijamiesten muistomerkin.
