Charon Mystery Cache

This cache has been archived.

PPete: Da es hier im äußersten Sonnensystem rauh zugeht und es den Pluto-Mond "Charon" immer aus seiner Umlaufbahn warf, kommt er ins Archiv.

Geocache Description:

A family-friendly walk along the left bank of river Traun with the opportunity to have a very close look to a hydropower station. Due to the fine asphalt road the cache is also suitable for biking and inline-skating.

Charon is the largest moon of dwarf planet Pluto. It was dicovered 1978 by astronomer James Christy. The astronomer suggested to name the new moon "Charon", which is similar to the nickname "Char" of his wife Charlene.
Charon is also a Greek mythological figure: The ferryman who carries souls into the world of the dead. The Greek figure is pronounced "Karon" but the ones who know the funny background of the moon's naming pronounce it "Sharon".

Look at the pictures: Charon's diameter of 1212 km is quite large compared to its central planet Pluto with 2390 km.

Ok, bring your spaceship to the Launch pad "Gasthof Ufermann" at
N 48° 10.645 / E 14° 07.091

Lift off and fly to Pluto at
N 48° 10.354 / E 14° 05.763
(Remember: when this Cache has been hidden, Pluto was one of the 9 planets of our solar system. Since 2006 it's "just" a dwarf planet and no longer one of the now remaining 8 planets)

Now search for its moon and Cache Charon, which orbits 19571 km away from Pluto!
(sticker tells you: 1 millimeter equates 785 kilometer)

Have fun, PPete
