Geocache Description:

This is a 3 point adventure multi-cache that will show you some historical sites that have disappeared into the bush.

People are usually taking about 2.5 hours to complete - especially if they walk. I've rated terrain as 3.5 because there is one part where you'll have to have to bush bash a short distance. However, most is along paved road where you can easily ride a bike - although there are hills to negotiate.

Bring a torch - not for the cache - but so you can do some exploring afterwards.

Cawley was established in the 1880s as a village to house the railway workers while the rail line was being built. It became the centre for a number of small farms, but disappeared around 1889 when the rail line opened, and was absorbed into the Royal National Park. The trip to Stanwell Park from Sydney was a 1.5 hour trip costing three shillings second class.

The original railway line was re-surveyed in 1908 and realigned to reduce the gradient in this section of track from 1:40 to 1:75.

More history of this area can be found at: Helensburg & District History Society

Now to the cache…

You will be walking/riding along Cawley Road that used to pass through Cawley. The NPWS had it closed to public vehicular access around 2001 - although I've seen a police 4WD and a trail bike on it, so keep a lookout.

To get to WP1, follow the Old Princes Highway until you find a gated fire trail.

WP1: S34° 09.607 E150° 58.965

At WP1 find the DMR number that we’ll call: ABCD.

Use these numbers in the following co-ordinates to get WP2: S34° 0B.CBA E150° 5B.D6D

IMPORTANT: To get to WP2 you don’t need to trespass on State Rail property. Crossing railway lines can be very bad for your health! There is a well defined path that follows the creek for part of the way, then you may get your feet wet...

WP2: Unfortunately some graffiti vandals have defaced the beautiful brickwork. On the left hand side (as you face downstream) you'll find the year that they inflicted their damage in the form ABCD.

Simply substitute these numbers into the final co-ordinates.

GZ is at:

S 34° 1B.B74

E 150° 5D.48D

The old settlement of Cawley was about 100m south of WP2. It's very overgrown with bracken ferns so there isn't much to see. You can climb up to the old rail path but it’s very overgrown. Just north of WP2 is an old cutting through which the trains would have passed on their way to Waterfall).

WP3: The best way to WP3 is to return back the way you came and follow the bitumen road.

Enjoy the orange mud!
