ATAVYROS is by far the highest mountain on Rhodes: altitude 1216 m.
The second highest mountain -Akramitis-
is much lower: altitude 821 m.
Both are only accessible by foot!
This -in our opinion- justifies even more placing a cache on both tops.
The Atavyrosroute we recommend is the southern approach: it is a
very clear route on an antique, beautifull monopathi , it's inclination is
gentle and even and it is well marked with cairns/Steinmanchen and red
dots. ( Rother Wanderfuhrer Rhodos, route nr.28 , but I think you will find
your way to the top without it too !!).
A climb of 750
m. It took us about 5 hours up and down-without the
breaks;( Rother estimates 6 hours).
Important: bring lots of drinks; 2,5-3 l./person, I recommend !
And of course good shoes.
There is no shadow!!
Startingpoint: N 36 10.136 E 27 51.092 , elev.
520 m.
This is at a clear sign -see picture- just outside the village Ag.
Isidoros.
Halfway you will reach a windpark: the route gets a little bit messed
up here, but use your eyes. Then halfway the windpark itself the route seems to
split up: bear left here, cross the dirtroad : go left rounding the little hill
-Frameno ! On top of this you will see a great deal of the remaining route in
front of you.
Upon reaching the top there is a fence which encircles the ruins of the Temple
of Zeus ( do not forget to go there). In the fence there is a
gate which opens easily, and there are no signs that it is off limits
there. Go through it -we placed some clear cairns- following the markings. The
temple is on your right. Keep
on climbing towards the white construction. Once reached this ,you can open
the second gate in the fence.
The topsign is on your left!
You
can see all over the island and probably further, 360° !!
Finding the cache should not be difficult. Hide it well
again!
BTW 1: You will need your own pencil to write your log!
BTW 2: !! Do not go up when it is not a clear sky. Especially not when you do not have a guidebook and/or good map !!
Enjoy your hike.
Small note on cache maintenance: We met a dutch couple living near Rhodes city, owning a restaurant there.
The are our contact, will maintain the cache.
