Geocache Description:

We found "Szappan-szék" ("Soap-sodic)") as we were looking for MikiCache's"Vándor Homok" ("Quicksand") cache.
It is not a seat but a dried lake. Today the dried beds of the former sodic lakes - located east of the sand dunes -still show signs of the once rich acquatic life of this area. Between the sand dunes, there are both larger and smaller sodic lakes developed in the windformed beds. Water streamed from the surrounding area bringing a lot of mineral salt with it, so the pH-value of the lakes reached 11. With this water (or with the salt that crystallized on the shores of the lakes) local people used to wash their clothes. Such lakes dried out in the last decades such as Kondor-lake, the Szívós- and Szappan szék and the Szappanos-lake next to Bugac.
Today only the water from melted snow recalls the former abundant acquatic life of the sodic lakes. Who would think that people used to lived from fishing here and that in the 30s Szappan-szék was a popular spa with buildings, bathing huts and a dancehouse? After longer arid periods, the salt crystallization can still be observed today. You can feel the alkali smashing small pieces from the soil between your fingers.
We brought this cache here with our great-grandmother, who used to come here forthe alkali when she was a young girl and brought it home for washing. Unfortunately we didn't find the location of the former dancehouse.:( We have hidden this geocache in memory of the vanished natural wonder and ofthe farmers who used to lived in this area. The cache is approachable from road 52, through Fülöpháza on a sandy road that is drivable even on rainy days.
You may visit MikiCache's interesting cache further down the same road...
