Geocache Description:

The US 82nd Airborne Division's mission was to protect the far right flank of the invasion area. This included capturing Ste. Mere-Eglise from the German garrison stationed there. The capture of Ste. Mere-Eglise was important because it straddled the main road between Carentan and Cherbourg.
Paratrooper John Steele became a hero of the liberation of Sainte-Mère-Eglise for his chute got stuck on the church tower and although injured he hung there "playing dead" for over two hours until being taken prisoner by the Germans.
