Geocache Description:

Monster (def): 1. Something of unnatural size, shape, or quality; a prodigy; an enormity; a marvel. 2. Specifically, something departing greatly from the usual type, as by having too many limbs. 3. Any person or thing of unnatural or excessive ugliness, deformity, wickedness, or cruelty. From the Latin Monstrum meaning divine omen or to warn. You have been warned... The MONSTER lives!

This cache is a great way to sharpen your hunting skills! You can find several other caches near most of the stages of this series.

Doctor Frankenstein’s creation is the quintessential monster. Perhaps the longest-lasting and most memorable image of Frankenstein and his Monster was created in 1931, when Universal Pictures released what is now often praised as the definitive horror film. Born out the mind of a madman, he was created from a graveyard corpse, another from the gallows and an abnormal brain. One creature, composed of many various parts, whom had life breathed into him by the power of a lightning bolt. Well Frankie, you’re not the only one that can create a monster from many various parts, 40 legs to be specific. Move over Dr. Frankenstein, Dr. Essenstein and the Austin Igors are in town!

It started with a simple thought; would it be possible to get a large portion of the Austin geocaching community to work together towards a common goal? That goal was to create one cache where everyone’s contribution created something whose sum was greater than its parts. One where many different styles of hides were implemented and many different locations selected. Dozens of different parts giving birth to one organism. When this idea started to evolve into fruition, my thought was perhaps I can get as many as ten people to participate. A dozen would be awesome. Anything greater than that would have been considered unbelievable at the time. Well, how wrong I was. We ended up with 36 people placing 40 redirectors plus the final cache!

Slaying the MONSTER will take you on a trek that totals 111 miles as the crow flies. Elevation varies from approximately 400 feet to 1000 feet. You will visit various parks, bodies of water, urban locations and other sites of interest. Your journey will reach out toward the hills west of us, deep into South Austin, East near Decker Lake, North to Georgetown and many points between. The final cache container is a 30 caliber ammo can. There is currently no swag in the can. There will be copies of the MONSTER Route Map for each of you to keep, showing the path across Travis and Williamson Counties that you have taken. You will also find the MONSTER Tokens... take one. Each token is numbered randomly. Email me when you have retrieved one and we'll meet up at Take a Nap. Then you'll spin Dr Essenstein's Magical Monster Prize Wheel of Fortune to see which prize you have won! You also get to keep your token as a souvenir of your quest. When all the prizes run their course, the final cache will become a standard swag trading container. With almost 40 prizes to start out with, I assume that will take quite some time.

As an added twist, to find the cache YOU MUST BE ABLE TO PROJECT A WAYPOINT. Rumor has it that the last redirector isn’t as basic as “go to these coordinates to get the final cache”. You will be projecting to a location and looking for the hideous MONSTER image that is reflected in this photo. When you arrive there you will need to follow the instructions in the following poem. I highly recommend you print both the picture and the poem and take them on your quest.

One hundred eleven
No more and no less
Are the number of miles
That I must confess
Have guided you here
To this restful spot
You’re warmer, you’re warmer
You’re sizzling hot!

Now gaze to the west
And peer a bit high
Up towards the horizon
Not quite to the sky
There he does hover
That groveling beast
Remember he’s west
Don’t look to the east

His huge gaping teeth
His beard green with slime
Ferocious and scary
Yet gently sublime
He’s now standing guard
He’s watching the stash
But don’t bother asking
He won’t spare the cache
The solution you see
Is the secret he keeps
And most of his hours
He sleeps and he sleeps

While he is snoozing
You must set your pace
Daring and quiet
This isn’t a race
Tiptoe right up there
Get into his space
Now you’ve done it
You’ve come face to face!

Now ever so gently
No, not underneath
The secret he savors
Is kept ‘tween his teeth
His fangs are quite sharp
So take less than a second
Or he’ll gobble you up
And eat you I reckon

You now have the key
It’s one final poem
Don’t worry, it’s close
Not too far to roam
Just several more steps
You’ll be done in a flash
It’s now time to party
To throw a big bash
It’s now time to finish
The Great Monster Cache!

You did the cache
You did The Monster Cache
The Monster Cache
It was a graveyard smash
You did the cache
You caught on in a flash
You did the cache
You did the Monster Cache
Aaaaaaaa......
Ooooooooooooooooooo......

You will notice that the leg names are for the most part in alphabetical order, what the order of the redirectors are remains a mystery. Each redirector has been named by its owner. If you find you need a hint on any given redirector, you may contact mda_taz, JforceAtx, or moosiegirl.

Due to the overwhelming number of times the final has been muggled, swag items are going to be kept at a minumum. At the moment there is only a logsheet, but we hope that will change soon as we tap into our creative juices and design a less tempting "meta" container.

Best of luck on your mission to slay this monstrous atrocity that slithers its way throughout our great land. Having done so, you will automatically enter The Monster Slayers Hall of Fame (MSHF), an honor only bestowed upon the best Geo-Soldiers our country has to offer. We hope you enjoy tackling this cache as much as we've enjoyed creating it. Watch your back, good luck and beware...
