Geocache Description:

Torre Station Please bring your own pen as log book must be signed.

Torre was the original terminus of the line from Newton Abbot and was planned to extend to Torquay Harbour. The demands of the residents of Paignton, Brixham and Dartmouth took the line to Kingswear for Dartmouth (now operated by the Paignton and Dartmouth Steam Railway). The result was that Torquay's two stations are a long way from the town centre. Nonetheless, Torre is a listed building, despite being blighted by the nasty breeze blocks on the station building extension, Halford's back wall, and the grotty shelter. The footbridge, which was attacked by an an arsonist in 2001 was not repaired until 2005. Note the remains of the substantial goods yard which was attached to the station, the listed but vandalised signal box, and the station signs renovated by the friends of Torre station. Large numbers of people still use this station, in spite of it's decrepit state. One day..... (there are moves afoot for renovation of the entire place). Outside the station is an original tramstop from when Torre served as the northern terminus of Torquay's trams. Doubtless, under the tarmac, the original rails still lie.
