Geocache Description:

This is the fourth in the Bute Geology Geocache series and we explore the Carboniferous rocks of South Bute.

Park at the small parking area at N55 44.258 W5 02.753 and follow the clear path down towards Dunagoil Bay. The path can be muddy, and it can be pretty boggy in places before you reach the little beach at the bay.

The cache is an army surplus fuse canister, hidden near spectacular basalt columns.

Most people will recognise the Giant’s Causeway and the basalt columns of Staffa, however there are many examples of columnar basalt in this part of the world. The hexagonal columns were formed as the lava flow that covered this are 345 million years ago cooled and contracted, and fissures formed to create these columns at right angles to the direction of the flow.

It’s well worth walking up to the cliff face to examine the columns, but beware of loose rocks!
