Geocache Description:

This is the fifth in the Bute Archaeology Geocache series and it’s hidden in an Iron Age Dun that has some more modern history!

At Cnoc an Rath lies an Iron Age Dun hidden among the trees.

Within the Dun lies a solitary, dilapidated grave. The story goes that a man from Arran, who lived, worked, and in the end, died on Bute wanted to be buried facing Arran. So there he lies, -or rather, stands facing towards the island of his birth.

The Funeral

The Grave

Retrieving this cache is best done in dark gloomy conditions. Just after sunset when the crows are settling down and the bats and owls have taken to the wing.

I would suggest that you park at N55 51.629 W5 06.721 and go through the gate into the kirkyard and down to the gate on the main road. EXTREME CARE must be taken. There is no pavement and the gate is right on the bend. You could as an alternative park in the kirkyard car park at N55 51.575 W5 06.568, but that doesn’t make the road any safer!

The cache is an army surplus fuse canister, hidden behind some stones.

This cache contains a domino
