We take salt for granted these days, but in the past it was a scarce and highly valued commodity.
On the Island of Bute salt was difficult to come by as it had to be brought over from the mainland by boat. With the discovery of a coal seam in nearby Millhouse the decision was taken to build a salt pan that would allow salt to be produced on the island from seawater by evaporation.
Unfortunately, the local coal turned out to be of very poor quality and the boat bringing the iron pan from the mainland sank on the way across!
