Geocache Description:

Terrain possibly poor to start with, depending on where you start off, then pleasant, easy walking. Not idea for Buggies.

The cache itself is of medium size cofee container with screw on top.

Don't know too much about this area, only that it is quite popular as a picnic area and the views across the severn valley and Gloucester vale are fantastic.
The land where the cache is place is common land where one can often find sheep or cattle roaming free. Where we parked on the common it looked as though a lot of Limestone has been quarried and grass had grown over the spoil over a period ot time, giving rise to a lot of disturbances in the soil. Walking in a North-westerly direction from the small carpark one comes to the crest of an escarpment where the best views are to be had. Before one gets to the escarpment, you should see a long barrow on the skyline, I believe this is known as 'the toots' (ca. 2900 - 2500), but don't quote me on that. Habitation in the area has been from the Neolithic times thru to modern times, as is suggested by long barrows, iron-age pottery found on selsley common, site of Roman villa found at nearby Woodchester etc.
Some things of interest nearby to see is Nympsfield Long Barrow. This barrow has been 'robbed; of it's stones and it basically shows the floor plan of the passage and two side chambers. A mile down the road is Hetty Pegler's Tump (Uley long barrow) which is a chambered neolithic long barrow 120 feet long, 85 feet at its widest. It's open to go in (bring a torch) but it's narrow passage and the entrance is about three foot high, meaning to say you may have to crawl inside, but well worth seeing.
