In the logging days,VIRGINIA LAKE, (known locally as BAILEY's
LAKE) was a holding pond for logs that were shipped via railroad to
the end of the trestle that is now the long fishing bridge which
extends out into the lake. The logs were dumped into the water
straight off the train cars and held there until they were needed
at the sawmill which was located nearby on the lakeshore.
In 1895, Moon and Kerr established the first sawmill on this
site and employed 85 men. It was nicknamed the Little Red Mill. In
1900, the city of Virginia burned, but the mill was left untouched
and was able to supply the lumber for the rebuilding of the city.
When it closed in 1907, it was known as the Virginia Lumber Company
Mill #2 and employed 100 men. At one time this company had the
biggest white pine sawmill in the world.
There are several points of interest along this 1 mile paved
trail. 1. There is a small row boat which has been refurbished by
volunteers near the senior citizens apartments. It is a fun place
to take a picture. 2. Farther on down the path there are a couple
of signs on the left side of the path that indicate local history.
3. Walk through the veggie and flower gardens of the natural food
co-op. This is free. See what is blooming or growing in the season
you are there. You can fish from the bridge or shore.
Please replace the covering for the cache so it is hidden.
ENJOY!!!
