Geocache Description:

Take a hike through history along the abandoned Great Northern railbed that served the first Cascade Tunnel and was the site of the worst rail disaster in American history when more than 96 people lost their lives at the avalanche at Wellington on March 1, 1910.

Park at either the Wellington Trailhead near Stevens Pass or the Martin Creek Trailhead near Scenic--directions on how to get there can be found here and both require a Northwest Trail Pass--and explore this wonderful and fascinating trail. If you don't have time to do the entire trail, the cache is closer to the Wellington Trailhead, which also includes a short side trail to the entrance of the Old Cascade Tunnel. The Wellington end of the trail begins with the trail running through a very long concrete snowshed (over 2,000 feet in length) which was built to protect trains from avalanches after 96 people were killed by such an avalanche in 1910. Informational Displays are located along the entire length of the trail.

This is a good hike with kids who can walk 5-6 miles on a very good trail with a maximum of about a four percent grade (if done roundtrip from the Wellington trailhead to the cache) with plenty of interest to see. Do watch out for stinging nettles and you'll want to bring bug spray and sun screen.
