Koljonvirta Traditional Geocache

Koljonvirran taistelussa 1808-10-27 Eversti Johan August Sandelsin komentamat Ruotsin (Suomi oli tuolloin osa Ruotsia) joukot puolustivat siltaa ja voittivat hyökkäävät Venäjän joukot. Sodan lopputulokseen voitolla ei ollut vaikutusta, Suomesta tuli Venäjän osa vuoteen 1917.

Varsinainen taistelun muistomerkki on noin kilometrin päässä luoteessa Oulun tien varressa, jossa ruotsalaisten joukkojen sodanjohto oli. Lähellä kätköpaikkaa Mansikkaniemessä on muistomerkki ruhtinas Dolgorukille, joka kuoli taistelun loppuvaiheessa. Myöskin hyvin lähellä on Juhani Ahon Museo sekä Koljonvirta Camping.

Nykyisen sillan (rakennettu vuonna 1971, taistelun ajan hirsirakenteinen silta oli etelämpänä) molemmissa päissä on hyvät parkkipaikat, mutta käytä läntistä – Oulun tiellä on paljon liikennettä kaikkina vuorokaudenaikoina. Tämä on Iisalmen ensimmäinen kätkö. Kätkö on vaikeasti saatavilla talvella lumiaurausten kinostumisen takia.

Koljonvirta was the site of a battle in 1808-10-27, in which the Swedish (Finland was a part of Sweden at the time) troops under the command of Colonel Johan August Sandels defended the bridge and defeated the attacking Imperial Russian troops. Ultimately, this was the last battle they won, the war was lost and Finland became a part of Russia until 1917.

The actual memorial of the battle is about a kilometer northwest on the Oulu road, where the Swedish battle command was situated. There is a memorial near here in Mansikkaniemi to the Russian prince Dolgoruki who died almost at end of the battle. Also very nearby, you will find the Juhani Aho Museum and Koljonvirta Camping.

There are good parking spots at both ends of the current bridge (built in 1971, the wooden bridge of the battle was more southernly), but you should use the western one — there is quite a lot of traffic on the road at all hours. This is the first cache in Iisalmi. Cache is hard to retrieve in the winter due to snow embankments.
