The cache has been hidden in the vicinity of Rooiberg north-east of Eksteenfontein in the Richtersveld in an area where a number of micro-plants can be found amongst the quartsite pebbles
The purpose with this cache is to draw attention to the micro-plants that grow in the area. The micro-plants are growing in an open stretch of ground strewn with white quartsite pebbles on the southern side of the track. It takes a trained eye to see these tiny marvels of nature amongst the quartsite pebbles which form their typical habitat. Be very careful not to step on the plants. Just strolling around, one could well step on, and kill, these tiny plants. A very slow search, while adjusting your eyes to focus on small things, is necessary to have any chance of finding the plants. Have a botanical guide available and search for the Aviona, Crasula and Lithop species.
We were on tour in the area in 10 Land Cruisers from the Land Cruiser Club of SA and Virosa Tours, driving in a southerly direction from the Orange River towards Eksteenfontein. Our tour guide helped us find some of the micro-plants, and also suggested that we place our cache in this area.
The cache is contained in a light-blue plastic box with a white lid. It comprises:
- an acrylic crystal clock, donated by Keith Richardson;
- a Blundstone Boot keyring, from Australia;
- a roll of Super 'C' energy tablets;
- 2 AA batteries;
- a bulldog clip;
- Land Cruiser Club of SA flyer;
- Notebook and comments (forgot to leave a pencil)
