Muglgupf Multi-cache

Archeologically and historically interesting cache at the barrow at Großmugl with a walking distance of about 1km without significant altitude gain.

Der weithin sichtbare Leeberg bei Großmugl gehört zu den größten Grabdenkmälern Mitteleuropas. Das Wort „Lee“ kommt aus dem Gotischen und bedeutet Grabhügel (lat. Tumulus). Das aus der Hallstattzeit (750-450 v. Chr.) stammende Grab befindet sich auf einem Ausläufer des Stiegelberges, oberhalb einer aufgelassenen Ziegelei. Die Macht der in den großen Gräbern bestatteten Hallstattfürsten im Weinviertel dürfte nicht besonders weit gereicht haben. Im Regelfall umfasste sie nur das den Grabhügel umgebende Dorf und seine Umgebung, was auch daran ersichtlich ist, dass in nur rund 6km Entfernung die nächsten Grabhügel stehen. Unmittelbar westlich des Großmugls ist eine niedrige Bodenerhebung zu erkennen, die von einem zweiten, wesentlich kleineren Grabhügel stammt. Der rundum angeackerte große Grabhügel weist eine ovale Basis mit einem Umfang von 180 Schritt und eine Höhe von 16m auf, ist somit der größte noch erhaltene Grabhügel der Hallstattzeit in Mitteleuropa. Der Erdhügel ist zur Gänze künstlich aufgeschüttet, wobei etwa 6000m³ Erdreich verwendet wurden. Der kleine Grabhügel im Westen ist heute noch rund 2m hoch und auf 25m auseinandergeackert. Die Untersuchung des kleinen Hügels fand 1950 statt, wobei mehr als 20 teilweise verzierte Tongefäße geborgen wurden, die im Naturhistorischen Museum Wien zu besichtigen sind.

The barrow at Großmugl is one of the biggest grave mounts (lat. tumulus) in Central Europe and dates back to the Hallstatt-period (750–450 B.C.). It is located at the foothills of the Stiegelberg above an abandoned brickyard. It seems that the power of the Hallstatt-sovereigns in the Weinviertel was rather limited. Normally it extended to the village and the surroundings around the barrow, shown by the fact that the next barrows are only 6km away. At the western side of the Großmugl a low elevation marks the remainings of another, smaller barrow. The big grave mount has an oval base with a perimeter of 180ft and a height of 16m and therefore is the biggest preserved grave mount of the Hallstatt-period in Central Europe. It is entirely artificially heaped up, using 6000m³ of soil. The smaller mount is about 2m high with a diameter of 25m. An investigation in 1950 yielded more than 20 partially decorated clay jugs which can be seen at the Naturhistorisches Museum in Vienna.
