Another one in Prague, I hope that the coords aren't off this time.Enjoy the hunt.
Brevnov is the oldest preserved settlement in Prague. The Benedictine monastery was founded in 993 in a valley by the western road to Prague as the first monastery in Bohemia ever. In the second half of the 14th century, it was dedicated to St. Marghareta, a popular saint of that time.
In the 18th century, a new Baroque church was built by one of the best architects of the period, Krystof Dientzenhofer, who is also the author of St. Nicholas Church at Mala Strana.
In the communist era, the Benedictines were expelled (and imprisoned) and the complex served for the purposes of the secret police. Today it is owned by the Benedictine order again.
The monastery was declared a part of National Cultural Heritage in 1991.
