Geocache Description:

Welcome to "The Big Wild"

Parrish Storrs Lovejoy is one of the people who get credit for helping invent the idea of conservation. He and people like Aldo Leopold and Teddy Roosevelt were among the first to recognize the importance of saving wild places. P.S. Lovejoy laid the groundwork that guided Michigan's reforestation and public land management through much of the 20th century. He also created the sort of advocacy journalism that helped sway the public to support what's right. It was not only his vision that fueled the reforestation movement but his ability as a writer to build public awareness needed for such a program.Lovejoy's magnum opus, though, is the Pigeon River Country State Forest. Lovejoy envisioned the Pigeon River Country as a "Big Wild" and worked to expand its original 19,500 acres of tax-reverted and purchased lands. When he died in 1942, his ashes were scattered here. This cache hopes to show you just a couple of the highlights of Lovejoy's Big Wild.Note: Stage 1 may not be placed too precisely -- a string of thunderstorms made the GPS receiver and me a little jittery. It's not really hidden all that well, so you should be able to find it if you're within a few hundredths of a minute. Feel free to move it to the right spot if you've got a clear sky.
