Murder Mystery Mystery Cache

This cache has been archived.

Dirty_Bird: Time for this cache to be archived. This was DB & BNB’s first official cache and we had a lot of fun with it, however it does not get a lot of traffic and seems to require a lot of maintenance.
For those who never got the chance to solve the mystery – “EVIL CHICKEN DID IT”.[}:)]

Stage one was left intact for anyone who might want to visit some day.

Geocache Description:

Dirty_Bird

BigNastyBrain

This is a murder mystery cache that will lead you on a search for the Final Cache stage and the Logbook.  To locate the Final Cache you must solve the mystery by determining which suspect is the murderer and what murder weapon was used.

The Crime Scene

You will start by visiting the crime scene (the coordinates posted above) and searching for clues. The coordinates for the next stage can be found at the crime scene.  You can park right off the dirt road at: N-39° 26.615 W-075° 05.435

The Police Report

After examining the crime scene you will go to a second location to review the Official Police Reports.  At this stage the motives for each of the suspects and additional clues will be revealed.  The Police Reports will contain the coordinates for six nearby caches that contain the Suspect Interview Sheets.

Suspect Interviews (six parts)

Each Suspect cache will contain a sheet of information obtained while questioning the suspect.  This information will relate to their alibi and other relevant clue information.  You may have to use the geocaching.com website to verify the alibis of each suspect.  Now all you have to do is locate the Evidence Locker to inspect the murder weapons.  Each Suspect cache will contain partial coordinates to the “Evidence Locker” – these coordinates will be easily assembled after visiting each suspect cache.

Evidence Locker

Once you have assembled the coordinates and located the “Evidence Locker Cache” you will find the six potential murder weapons.  Each weapon has been assigned a set of coordinates for each suspect.  If you know who the murderer is and what weapon they used then the coordinates will lead you to the FINAL CACHE.

FINAL CACHE

If you have selected the correct suspect and weapon you will be led to a 50 Cal. Ammo Container with the logbook and traditional trade items.  If you have the wrong suspect and murder weapon you will be led to a dead end in your investigation and you will find nothing, re-check your clues and try again.  The final Cache container will be well marked and fairly obvious; the container is painted yellow with black stripes like caution tape and it sits at the base of a unique looking tree.  The container is covered by a few loose sticks.

DO NOT REMOVE ANY EVIDENCE.  You must leave any evidence you find for others.  The cache containers have the information taped to the inside and is visible through the container.  Inside the containers at each stage are copies of the information that you need, feel free to take a copy but do not litter and let us know if the copies need to be replenished.  The containers used at each stage are not extremely waterproof so please make sure that the lids are on tight and the information is sealed in the Ziploc bags.  Attention to details is important. You will want to bring a note pad or piece of paper with you to record what you find.  If you miss something you may even have to revisit evidence.

Notes:
All coordinates involved in this cache were checked with a Magellan and a Garmin GPS by letting the units settle and lock onto the satellites at each location.  The coordinates were then checked on an overcast day and again on a sunny day and are as accurate as we can get them.
This cache may take one or two trips to the site in order to complete it and consists of 45 approved cache locations but can be solved by visiting as few as ten (this means there are thirty five dead ends).
With the exception of the final cache, all of the coordinates can be accessed without wandering off the existing trails more than 50 feet.
The final cache area is located in heavy foliage and may be more difficult to traverse in the spring and summer and may not be enjoyable for small children.
This cache is located in a State Park area which is closed from 9 p.m. until 5 a.m.
If you park and walk the entire course from the crime scene to the Evidence Locker expect a 1.7 mile hike (assuming you do not make any errors).

Difficulty rating is a 2.5 – Rated as Challenging. An experienced cache hunter will find this challenging, and it could take one or two trips to solve the mystery.

Terrain rating is a 2.5 - The average adult or older child should be OK depending on physical condition. Terrain is likely off-trail and may have one or more of the following: some overgrowth, some steep elevation changes, or more than a 2-mile hike in total.

IMPORTANT NOTE:
Please DO NOT contact the suspects directly for hints or clues for solving this cache.  The suspects are in fact real local geocachers but all of the facts needed to solve this mystery are revealed in the cache clues or available by browsing the Geocaching.com website.
All of the suspects included in this cache were contacted and permission was secured to use their names.  Part of the fun of this cache is the fact that it highlights several local geocachers, please do not spoil it by annoying them.  You may however, review their online log entries for clues or to verify their whereabouts, but trust us - they don’t even know who did it.
