Geocache Description:

This cross has moved to private land due to lawsuits from American Atheists. It is now near mile post 186 on I-80.

**NOTE** This cache is only accesible from west bound I-80. If you are traveling east on I-80 you will have to continue up the road to turn at exit 187. DO NOT TURN THROUGH THE MEDIAN. Not only is it illegal, but dangerous and may result in a citation from a friendly, or not so friendly, UHP Trooper. **NOTE**

This is a virtual cache that is fairly easy. There is a small hill you will have to climb. These crosses were the project of the Utah Highway Patrol Association. Many people donated time and money to build and erect these crosses throughout Utah, and many Boy Scouts helped with these projects.

In order to claim credit for this cache email me the answer to this question:
How many bolts are at the bottom of the cross? (total)

?December 8, 1974

William J. Antoniewicz joined the Utah Highway Patrol on July 16, 1974. He was assigned
to the Echo port of entry located on the Utah-Wyoming border. Troopers at that port drove a
marked patrol car the 40 miles from Coalville to the port when going on or off shift.

On December 8, 1974 Trooper Antoniewicz stopped a speeding vehicle 9 miles east of the
Echo Junction on Interstate 80. The driver of the speeding car ambushed Trooper Antoniewicz
as he approached the driver’s door. The felon fired two shots from a .38 caliber revolver, one
bullet struck Trooper Antoniewicz in the chest and the other bullet hit him in the back. The
felon then exited his car and kicked the dying Trooper several times in the face.

Eighteen months later a suspect was arrested and charged with the murder of Trooper
William Antoniewicz. The first trial resulted in a “hung jury.” Facing another trial, the subject
plead guilty to a reduced charge of second degree murder.

Trooper Antoniewicz was twenty seven years of age at the time of his death.
