The geocachers in the NW GA area welcome all GGA members to visit the fair city of Rome. It has a lot to offer everyone in the way of its surroundings, its history and its geocaches. Only a year ago, there were a handful of caches to be had here in Floyd County, now there are over 30, with more being planned. We will be serving our GGA members a hamburger/hot dog lunch with all the trimmings at 1:00 PM, with the meeting taking place from 2:00 - 4:00 PM. We are planning on having some nice door prizes on hand too.
While you are in the area, be sure to tackle such caches as: A Booger in Floyd, Briar Mountain, Berry College's Old Mill. Catch all of Deaglos 'Seven Hills of Rome' series or some of Team Happyspider's 'Ironworks: ' series. Go into the beautiful John's Mountain range and see beautiful scenery and get some of the 8 or 9 challenging caches up there. Need a cardio workout and scenery? Go after some of BadDawg83's famous hides.
Rome is a city that enjoys displaying its heritage and history. While most small cities are beginning to understand the need to preserve older buildings, Rome never forgot. The historical Broad Street downtown is a showcase for turn-of-the-century architecture, one can still read advertisements on the backside of the buildings that face the steamboat shipping lanes when they traversed the Etowah and Oostanaula rivers, the rivers meet to form the mighty Coosa River. Hernando De Soto passed through here in 1567 it is estimated, where an important Indian village was located at the convergence of these rivers.
At Myrtle Hill Cemetery, you can find the grave of Ellen Axon Wilson, wife of Woodrow Wilson who died in the White House. Here also lies the body of Charles Graves, the last WWI soldier to be brought back and buried in the U.S.; he was to be buried alongside the Unknown Soldier in Arlington Cemetery. His mother had other plans and brought him home to his native Rome, President Warren G. Harding attended the funeral.
In the Spring of 2003, The Atlanta Braves moved their Class "A" minor league team from Macon to Rome, the team went on last year to secure the National Class A Championship. The stadium is beautiful to see, the food pricing is reasonable and there is a home game on April 10th at 7 p.m.! Make plans to attend! For schedule and ticket info, click HERE.
