This cache has been archived.

marksmurph: It's over three months since I moved house and the webcam vanished. If you didn't log your visits in that time, hard lines. It's been fun.

Geocache Description:

Take a break from the hustle and bustle of Princes Street, have a look at the shops, have a quick pint and get your mugshot on the net!

WebCam Geocache

Edinburgh, Scotland

NOTE: Due to us moving house, this webcam has now sadly disappeared. I will keep this cache open for a while for people to log their late visits. Thanks to everyone who has visited over the last 16 years.

This webcam is to be found in Rose Street, a 'busier at night' street parallel to Princes Street, full of interesting shops, eateries and pubs!
Due to the narrow street and high buildings, your GPS may struggle to take you right to the spot. It should get you to the closest intersection however, which will take you to within 30m of the cam.

As with all webcam caches, you will require a mobile phone and a friend with Internet access.

Alternatively if you have a wireless laptop or smartphone, you can connect to my wireless network - look for the Geocache SSID and enter the password webcamcache when prompted.
iOS and Android users can use IP Cam Viewer Lite to view the cam and capture images. It also allows you to email the snapshot afterwards!
Here are the settings you'll need...
Make: Compro
Model: Compro IP50/70
Host / IP: cam.swiffed.com
HTTP Port: 8081

If you still can't manage to take a photo yourself, there a couple of other options!
Every hour, on the hour, a photo is taken automatically and Tweeted by @TheBlessedBench. You can see the photos here.
As a last resort, you can send me a message with the date and time you were there and I will send you your image. Snapshots are taken every minute and saved for 2 weeks.

Given the above, from now on I will ONLY accept logs that include a photo taken by the webcam.

What you need to do...

  • Go to the coordinates listed above. This will take you to a pub where it is always time for a Guinness! From there, you should look across the street to a window above Wolfits.
Say "Cheeeeeese!" and hold your GPS in the air (like you just don't care), optional!
  • Get your friend to access the webcam. When they see you they need to click on the capture button and save the image.
  • When you log the cache, make sure you include the snapshot as proof that you were there. I reserve the right to remove 'found' logs without photos!

NOTE: The web server built into the camera is designed for Internet Explorer, so other browsers will not be able to see the live stream. The SNAPSHOT button should still work though, SO YOU CAN STILL TAKE SNAPSHOTS.

You should find the webcam up and running most of the time (>95%)
The image refreshes constantly.

Although the camera operates 24 hours a day, it is wise to stick to daylight hours... the image will be clearer and you will be less likely to be troubled by revellers!
