Geocache Description:

Sabotage geocache ved Silkeborg Bad - Sabotage geocache at Silkeborg Bad

Practical information

It is recommended to start at the parking spot (see additional waypoints). The distance adds up to a total distance of 4 km's walk in the area. Depending on the speed the duration will be between one and two hours. It is essential to bring a flashlight. It should be noted that some of the places can be a little scary for children.

The cache is divided into five stages with a task at each stage. For each stage you have to solve the task and remember the solution in order to find the cache.

At the end of this page you will find a list of waypoints and you have the possibility to download them in several different formats. There are more waypoints mentioned than needed - the extra waypoints indicate positions where you have to be careful not to be discovered through your mission.

The story is 100% fiction - the location is the true thing.

Enjoy the cache!

Background

The story takes place close to the end of World War II. You are near to the Danish headquarters of the German occupation troops situated at "Silkeborg Bad".

You are part of the Danish resistance movement and part of the group "Banegaardsgruppen". Banegaardsgruppen is one of four active groups around Silkeborg. The other members of your group are hiding in Sweden after the Germans started to suspect them for the activities you are carrying out. Luckily you are not a suspect and you are able to stay in Silkeborg. You are the only representative of Banegaardsgruppen that's left.

Just before the other members were forced to hide in Sweden, they succeeded in hiding a very sophisticated  time-bomb on the railway somewhere in the forest east of the German headquarters. You did not participate in this activity which is why you did not have had to go to Sweden with your friends. You know that the bomb will detonate on May 5th at 11:55am when the train from Bryrup will pass before it reaches Silkeborg.

The mission takes place on the morning of Saturday, May 5th 1945. On the evening before BBC announced on the radio that the German troops had surrendered effective from Saturday morning 08:00am. Later on the evening the radio announced that the Danish king will arrive in Silkeborg by train from Bryrup at noon to celebrate with the city.

The bomb must be disarmed - otherwise it might hurt the king. This is your assignment. The bomb is made from various parts that Banegaardsgruppen borrowed from the German headquarter. You need to go back to the places and track the route of your friends in order to disarm the bomb.

At one of the groups hiding places you have found a summary of the bomb-task which can help you on your mission.

Summary of the mission

Time: May 1st, 1945
Place: German headquarters at Silkeborg Bad.
Target: Blow up the railway tracks south of the station.
Participants: Anders Andersen, Bent Bertelsen, and Chr. Christensen

Map of the area

The bomb was placed during the day on May 1st 1945. The mission started by entering Silkeborg Bad from the north side. We managed to sneak in when they were changing guards.

We then found different parts that when put together formed the bomb which we placed on the rails in the forest.

On the map below you can see the large buildings to the left. On the right side of the picture you can see the railway tracks. The bunkers are not visible on the map. Thee is a total of 10 bunkers and around 30 smaller installations with i.e. machine guns.

Be careful when entering the area. It is frequently patrolled by the German soldiers.

Stage 1: The explosives .
NOTE - This bunker has been locked. Use the hint-[Stage 1 : A=]FIVE.
OBS – Denne bunker er desværre blevet aflåst. Brug hintet- [Stage 1 : A=]FIVE

The most important part of the bomb are the explosives. We were very lucky and found a usable amount of explosive placed at N56°09.129 / E009°31.336 which is a little west of the main building called "Grossglockner".

It is a personnel bunker (type R622) - a double bunker with room for 20 soldiers. The bunker is guarded with machine guns from the right side of it. It is most easily accessed from the left entrance.

The explosives where found in the left room in the bunker. We were able with the simple drawings of the bunkers which we got from one of the carpenters hired for constructing the bunkers. It makes it much more easy.

Task 1: In the room (on the left!) with the explosive you can see some round holes from different types of pipes. One of these is not open, but needs to be counted anyway. How many of these holes are there in the room - they need to be more than approx. 10 cm. in diameter.

Stage 2: Detonator

To make the explosives blast a detonator is needed. We continued into the area and were nearly seen by from two machine gun posts (type 58C). We passed a large bunker at N56°09.078 / E009°31.034 where we needed to be extra careful. It is a radio bunker type R691.

After searching for at while, we found a box of detonators in a small bunker containing radio equipment. It is placed here: N56°09.034 / E009°31.107.

Task 2: The bunker contains three rooms - but how many accessible rooms are there in this bunker?

Stage 3: Lapel badge

During the reconaissance of the area we passed a personnell bunker type R622 (the same type as where we found the explosives) placed at N56°09.047 / E009°31.390. Here we found a lapel badge on the ground and we decided to keep it. That decision proved to be very important.

There are two very similar bunkers close to each other. On the way from stage 2 to stage 3 you will pass the "wrong" bunker. Be careful - there are very often guards in this area. Close to these bunkers is the Generals private building where General Hermann von Hanneken (and in the wars last few months General Georg Lindemann) lives.

Task 3: The left entrance to the bunker itself (the middle door when looking at the bunker) has two white letters written on the left wall when you go down the stairs. Which letters?

Stage 4: The radio component

Another important part of the bunker is the electronical construction. We therefore did an attempt at the communications bunker to locate these parts. The communication bunker is the type R618 placed at N56°09.261 / E009°31.789. On the way from stage 3 we found a few machine gun positions (type 58C) - be careful.

At the close combat position to the left of the entrance we were ask to show ID. After a short while with looking in our pockets we found the lapel badge and the gueard let us in.

We managed to find usable drawings of the electronical construction in the antenna room (which has welcome "Velkommen" written over the door). The antennas were partly inserted into the walls from the floor to the ceiling where they continue through the roof.

Task 4: How many antennas were there?

Stage 5: The watch

The watch that control the time of detonation was found in the large bunker type V196. It is placed at N56°09.186 / E009°31.949.

The watch is the generals private and very special watch (a Tutima made for Luftwaffe in 1941), and we found it in the Generals private room deep in the bunker.

When you enter the bunker you will see a long corridor. You need to go straight through this and through the "Officerer"s room to find the generals room. Luckily the troops are busy during the day working in the forest. The officers are busy in the radio room. Look out for the guard at the right of the entrance.

It is from this bunker that General Georg Lindemann will control the German troops in case the allied forces decides to attack the Germans in Denmark.

Task 5: In the Generals private room you will find openings to other rooms. How many (include the door, but not the two pipes near the floor)?

The location of the bomb

The location of the bomb is of course secret. But by using the answers from each task you will be able to find it's exact location.

Task Answer
Task 1 = A
Task 2 = B
Task 3 The 1st letters number in the alphabet = C

The 2nd letters number in the alphabet = D

(example: A=1, B=2...J=10, K=11, ...)

Task 4 = E
Task 5 = F

The bomb is placed 10 meters from the rails at his location:
