Geocache Description:

Family city cache to the roots of Austrian film history. The Cache is located in the 10th district in the south of Vienna in the recreation-area called "Kurpark Oberlaa".

The area was a former clay pit. In 1920 the site was used as film scenery for silent movies like "Sodom und Gomorrha" and "Queen of Slaves". For the WIG 74 - an international garden fair - a big park was built. It´s a frequently visited recreation area now.

During night the park is closed, the opening hours are depending on the season (at least 6 am to 6 pm). You can leave the area after closing through some revolving doors.

Details about the area can be found at:
http://www.wien.gv.at/ma42/parks/oberlaa.htm
(site in german with english link).

You can reach the cache area by public transport. Take the U1 to "Reumannplatz", and there you take the tram 67 direction "Kurpark Oberlaa" till "Kurpark Oberlaa". The starting point is very close to this station. Those coming by car, can park there. The trail is most of it`s length a tarmac walk. Only for the very last meters to the cache you have to leave the way. Length: 4 km, Difference in Height: 100 m.

The above difficulty and terrain rating was done with the program from geocaching.com. To be internationally comparable I`m using this result. (See the discussion in the forum also.) My personal opinion is a rating of 2.5 stars for difficulty and 1.5 stars for terrain.

Stage 1: The Russian Poet
N1 =  48° x1´ where x1 = 08.542
E1 = 016° y1´ where y1 = 24.161
At the starting point you will see a monument of a very famous russian poet. He wrote among other things Eugen Onegin and Boris Godunow. When was the monument - a present of Moscow - given to the city of Vienna. Take the crossfoot of the year and call the result A.

Stage 2: The Timeout
N2 =  48° x2´ where x2 = x1 + (2 * A + 11) / 1000
E2 = 016° y2´ where y2 = y1 + (10 * A + 6) / 1000
This place was in former times nice for having a break. Count the (living) birches there and add 1 to the result. The final result is B.

Stage 3: The German Fountain
N3 =  48° x3´ where x3 = x2 + (A + A * B + 4 * B) / 1000
E3 = 016° y3´ where y3 = y2 - (A * B - 5 * B) / 1000
Look for a fountain basin with an engraved date. Call the 4-digit year C.

Stage 4: The Garden Of Stones
N4 =  48° x4´ where x4 = x3 + (C - 1800) / 1000
E4 = 016° y4´ where y4 = y3 - (C - 1780) / 1000
This garden which is unfortunately most of the time closed is named after a city. Transform the name of the city into numbers (A=1, B=2,...Z=26). Add all the numbers and call the result D.

Stage 5: The Garden Of Love
N5 =  48° x5´ where x5 = x4 + (A + 3 * B + 2 * D) / 1000
E5 = 016° y5´ where y5 = y4 - (A + 3 * D + 3) / 1000
After kissing your partner ;-) count the meridians of the globe. The result is E.

Stage 6: Invasion from Outer Space
N6 =  48° x6´ where x6 = x5 + (11 * E + 10) / 1000
E6 = 016° y6´ where y6 = y5 - (11 * E + 3) / 1000
This is a dangerous stage. Prepare yourself that the invadors do not see you or they will make you climb up and down for the rest of your life! Count them all: The blue ones as F, the red ones as G and the yellow ones as H.

Stage 7: The Green Giant
N7 =  48° x7´ where x7 = x6 - (F * H + 5 * G) / 1000
E7 = 016° y7´ where y7 = y6 + (B + 19 * E + F * G * H) / 1000
Ask the green giant about his birthday. If he is not in the mood to answer look at his neck. Normally they wear it as a 4-digit number around their neck. Call the first two digits I and the second two digits J.

Stage 8: The Cache
N8 =  48° x8´ where x8 = x7 + (4 * J - F) / 1000
E8 = 016° y8´ where y8 = y7 - (3 * I - B) / 1000
Use the path as long as you can. Leave the trail only for the last meters. Good Luck!

The cache (third edition) initially contained:
  • cachenote (please don´t remove)
  • logbook (please don´t remove)
  • pencil (please don´t remove)

Happy caching, PlanetEarth

NB: To celebrate your finding (or to wipe away your tears if you were not successful) you find not far away from the starting coordinates a little cottage called Oberlaa with some nice "Heurige".
