On The Road Again
(with Don and Lars)
At ten o’clock one morning Don and Lars left Lars’ house in St
Bizarre to drive to the starting position A of their first cache
search in the Flytown area. They planned to stop once along the way
for lunch in Chalksbury at Alice’s Restaurant, ‘where you can get
anything you want’. The menu features such delicacies as
Kippers-on-Toast and Iced Tea.
Lars was driving, but worries about the approval process for his
upcoming caches had put him in an uncommunicative mood. It was not
until eleven o’clock that Don ventured to ask: “How far have we
gone, Lars?”
Lars glanced at the odometer. “Half as far as the distance from
here to Alice’s”, he snapped.
They arrived at the restaurant at noon, enjoyed a delicious
lunch, each choosing his favourite food and beverage from the menu,
and then hurried on their way. Not until two o’clock when they were
275 kilometers from the place where Don had asked his first
question, did he ask a second one. “How much farther do we have to
go to our starting position A, Lars?”
“Half as far,” he grunted, “as the distance from here to
Alice’s.”
They arrived at their starting position A, at three that
afternoon. Because of road conditions Lars had driven at widely
varying speeds.

The Cache Description
Your first problem is to determine exactly how far in kilometers
Don and Lars travelled from Lars’ house to their starting position
A for their first cache search. Call this distance X.
The starting position coordinates of Waypoint 1 for YOUR cache
hunt are N45 22.031 W75 36.837. (These coordinates are now correct
and final.)
Go to Waypoint 1 where you will find a signpost. The
significance of this sign will be realized by some cachers. Lower
down is a silver plate with some numbers on it. One line has three
numbers on it; the first number is 250 and the last number is 1994.
The middle number has 5 digits. The third and fourth digits of this
5 digit number give the bearing B that will be needed later.
Now take this 5 digit number and place a decimal point after the
2nd digit from the left to form a number N with format
xx.xxx . Subtract 1.019 from N to yield the minutes of the
North coordinate of Waypoint 2 and add 14.423 to N to yield
the minutes of the West coordinate of Waypoint 2. (The degree
portions of the coordinates for Waypoint 2 are the same as for
Waypoint 1.)
Waypoint 2 is the start of a little-used trail. Dogs are
permitted. You may park on the side of the road nearby.
The cache is exactly X meters from Waypoint 2 at a
bearing of B degrees relative to True North.
The cache is a camouflage-coloured plastic mayonnaise jar and is
well hidden using a patented technique. Please be sure to rehide it
exactly as you found it.
Estimated time to travel to the cache from Waypoint 1 is about
30 minutes.
