Geocache Description:

Imagine the boundaries of an English county marked out onto a piece of cardboard which is then cut-out with a pair of scissors. The point on the shape at which it would balance would be the centroid....

CENTROID
Pronunciation: 'sentroyd

Definition: \Cen"troid\, n. [L. centrum + -oid.]
The center of mass, inertia, or gravity of a body or system
of bodies.

A question of balance...

This cache lies within metres of the centroid of Cambridgeshire. It also happens to be of interest for a different reason. An ancient building once stood here and, surprisingly, part of it still does!

A large block of stone lies at an angle above the hidey-hole, which conceals a small tin-can with a plastic lid. There is a small log sheet inside but no room for a writing implement, so please take a pen or pencil with you.

Notes:

Although you could do this cache at night - you might want to park up and walk the last half mile (N52 21.879 E0 00.592), as driving a car up to this old graveyard at night, means passing a couple of farm houses, and you'll undoubtedly attract attention to yourself.

it works!
Cambridgeshire balanced on the head of a pin!

[From AntarticMan] My thanks to Jochta who used Arc-info GIS to find the spot. NB: This is the centroid of the boundaries of Cambridgeshire as they were from 1974 to 1998. It can also be called the ceremonial county as Peterborough (which is now a Unitary Authority and not part of the modern county of Cambridgeshire) is included in Cambs for ceremonial occasions.
